I think WalMart sells useless crap that people don't need in the first place. That said, they are in good company--KMart, Kohls, Target. And, competition / variety is always a good thing. Protectionism for union-shops is not. Finally, an empty building is bad for the area--much worse than a building filled with shoppers spending money.

No one wants to see established businesses fail. But we know that a competitive environment is good. Can you possibly dispute that the American auto industry needed a kick in the rear by the Japanese in the 70s and 80s? They were making crap (e.g., Plymouth K Car). They finally needed to get off their butts and start making quality. KMart is a company that either needs to do a turn-around or go out of business. (Frankly, I'm surprised that Sears and KMart are still in business.) Competition is good.

ReplyWhy isn't there the "same expectation that people will be coming in" to a department store with a reusable bag? I think the bag tax is stupid "tax policy" where the government has decided to change my behavior because it doesn't trust me to do so myself. The problem with this is that in one state, that means taxing cigarettes and shopping bags, while in another state that might mean taxing abortions or movies. Stick with building roads and stay out of my personal life, please.

ReplyIf 90% of Americans support the legislation, then how could voting against it be considered an act of cowardice? Those Republican and Democrats who voted against it could very well lose their next election based on their vote against something that 90% of Americans support.

ReplyI would hope that the initial frenzy over a new Costco will die down, but let's remember as we are fighting mall traffice that MONTGOMERY COUNTY approved an exception against building additional parking spaces on account of the new Costco. Thanks, guys.

It's because (1) we live in a nanny-state/county that thinks only it can effectively control the sale of liquor, and (2) state legislators are bought-and-paid-for by the alcohol distributor lobby.

This is fair. BUT, how about also "stinging" pedestrians who cross against the light? So often, drivers get frustrated that only a few cars can turn at a light because pedestrians walk even though turning traffic has a green right arrow. Or, they leave the curb to cross when the pedestrian light has only 2-3 seconds left. I think drivers would be more understanding of pedestrians if it were reciprocal. So, while the plainclothes officers are at these crosswalks, please consider ticketing, or at least warning, pedestrians who don't follow rules.
