Holocaust survivor Mina Parsont received a proclamation Tuesday from Gaithersburg mayor Sidney A. Katz.
The city of Gaithersburg will observe "Days of Remembrance" from April 7-14 in honor of Holocaust victims, Mayor Sidney A. Katz announced at Tuesday evening's City Council meeting. A proclamation recognizing the weeklong observance was presented by Katz to Holocaust survivor Mina Parsont, a Gaithersburg resident. Parsont is a "hidden child of the Holocaust," she said after receiving the proclamation. Separated from her parents, Parsont and her sister spent six months in hiding at the home of a Catholic family in her native France. Parsont spent many years locating the surviving family members who helped care for her in France, she said. After more than 50 years, she was reunited with them, according to a report by The Gazette. …

City Council Members Ryan Spiegel and Cathy Drzyzgula weigh in on Wednesday night's debate. What did you think?
Voters in a Patch poll of Maryland believe President Barack Obama swung and missed in Wednesday night's opening debate, with more than 80 percent saying they believe Republican challenger Mitt Romney emerged the victor. We want to hear your reactions to the first debate and two of Gaithersburg's City Council Members and a local delegate weighed in. Council Vice President Ryan Spiegel: Like Chuck Todd, I was struck by the civility of the debate and the genuine focus on issues and policy differences — perhaps the first such presidential debate since they started being televised. There really weren't any personal attacks or zingers. It was a respectful, albeit passionate disagreement about visions for our future and about policy details. That…

Ross and Rowse waited too long to file their complaint, board finds.
Tom Rowse and Paula Ross, two former candidates for City Council who lost their election bids, waited too long to file their complaint against the Mayor and three winning candidates, the Gaithersburg election board found earlier this week. At their meeting on Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors of Elections dismissed the complaint, which alleged that Council members Jud Ashman, Cathy Drzyzgula and Ryan Spiegel formed a secret political committee with Mayor Sidney Katz and sent out misleading mailers to voters. Ashman, Drzyzgula and Spiegel all vehemently deny the allegations. According to City Attorney Lynn Board, who was not at the meeting, the BOSE determined that the complaint, filed on Jan. 20, was not filed within 30 days of the alleged…
