After a number of serious accidents, the Maryland State Highway Administration plans significant changes to the intersection of Great Seneca Highway and Kentlands Boulevard/Orchard Ridge Drive, Gaithersburg police told members of the Quince Orchard Park community on Tuesday. SHA began studying the intersection about a year and a half ago, spurred by an incident in which a pedestrian was struck and severely injured, Officer Scott Scarff said at a Council in the Community meeting. The biggest safety concern surrounds the geometry behind the intersection's design, which prevents motorists from clearly seeing pedestrians in the crosswalk, Scarff said. Gaithersburg officials joined members of the Quince Orchard Park community Tuesday night to address issues and concerns within the neighborhood in a special Council in the Communities meeting. Below are notes on a number of topics discussed by city officials and community members: Crime Summary Per Police Chief Mark P. Sroka: "As far as crime goes, this is a very safe community and we have very few crimes committed in Quince Orchard Park." Eight total crimes crimes reported in the last six month period for this community: one burglary, two forgeries, one drug complaint, four disorderly conduct calls. Results of the city of Gaithersburg's Main Street Survey were revealed to the mayor and City Council.
Vasilis and Yoyogi Sushi, two Main Street staples, have emerged as overwhelming favorites among the residents of the Kentlands, Lakelands and Quince Orchard Park communities, as determined by the city of Gaithesburg's Main Street Survey given to the mayor and City Council Monday. The survey ranked the top 10 Main Street shops, among other things, based on community response. Vasilis was ranked No. 1 with 45.8 percent of the vote. Yoyogi was No. 2 with 38.3 percent. Batik, Corner Store Beer and Wine, Spagnvola, Chloe's Coffee, Ming's Asian Bistro, Main Street Cafe, Kentlands Beer and Wine and Kentlands Main Street Barber rounded out the top 10. Had Vasilis this evening. Waiter was superb. Nice salad with salmon-- dressing is delicious. Eggplant dip is amazing. Learned that most of their food is organic and tokd them they should make this more well known! I think this is a major draw:)   more ›

That intersection has ALWAYS baffled me, especially how MIS ALIGNED the left turn lane onto QO Blvd is. It is one of the WORST highway engineering designs I have EVER seen for a suburban area. Thing is, it may be a year and a half off.....BUT THE DAMN THING SHOULD HAVE BEEN DESIGNED BETTER FROM THE START!!! .....if private citizens and the police have had issues with it....don't you think the "…   more ›
