The best advice for drivers today is to stay off the roads, according to the Maryland State Highway Administration. For those who need to drive, SHA is urging motorists to slow down, use caution and increase the distance between your car and the driver ahead of you. “Don’t be misled by the bare pavement you may see as you wake up this morning. Conditions will change rapidly and we’re urging drivers to stay off the roads and leave the driving to our crews,” SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters said in a news release. “Although crews are primarily treating roads with salt, we fully anticipate plowing roads as snow begins to accumulate. If you encounter our crews, remember to leave plenty of following distance and never try to pass plows.” …

The warning goes into effect at midnight.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Montgomery County, in effect from midnight tonight through 3 a.m. Thursday. The storm that’s been dubbed the “snowquester” is expected to dump 4 to 8 inches of snow on Montgomery County, beginning Tuesday evening and tapering off Wednesday night. The Washington Post’s "Capital Weather Gang" blog is predicting higher snowfall accumulations in the northern and western portions of the county. Snow-covered roads are expected to make travel difficult, and the storm could also bring power outages.

No major snow is predicted, but some cold and wet precipitation is predicted to fall in Maryland over the next two days.
While no major snow event is forecast for Montgomery County this week, there is some wintry weather in our future. Rain, mixed with snow and sleet mainly after 1 a.m., is likely tonight, according to the National Weather Service. Accumulation of less than half an inch is expected. Lows of around 34 degrees are forecast. Friday’s weather is predicted to be rainy and foggy, with a high of 44 degrees. The weather will turn cooler and breezy, with winds increasing to 20 to 25 mph after midnight. NWS gives a 30 percent chance of snow overnight, again with little to no accumulation.

Much of Maryland—from the D.C. metro area to the Baltimore suburbs—is under a winter weather advisory Monday morning. The advisory is in effect from 5 a.m. until noon in Baltimore, Carroll, Harford, Howard and Montgomery counties, as well as Baltimore City, the National Weather Service announced Sunday afternoon. Temperatures are expected to be in the high 20s by midday, but morning commuters may encounter freezing rain mixed with sleet and possibly snow, according to the advisory. Only a trace of accumulation is expected. Winds from the south will gust to 10 to 15 mph, the advisory said. The precipitation "will cause travel difficulties," the advisory said. Forecasters aren't sure whether there will be any significant snow—or just rain.
Much of the DC Metro region could be in for another dose of winter weather this weekend, depending on how an approaching storm shapes up. The National Weather Service warns that a system moving in from the southeast "will likely impact portions of the Mid-Atlantic Saturday and Saturday night." "At this stage, rain or snow is possible depending on the storm track," it adds. The latest forecast for the area calls for a mix of rain and snow starting Saturday morning, then switching over to just rain by early afternoon. Snow may slip back into the picture Saturday evening as temperatures drop again. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Montgomery and Prince George's counties until 1 p.m. today. The alert calls for a mix of freezing rain, sleet and rain, with possible accumulations of less than one inch of sleet and under a tenth of an inch of ice. Temperatures are expected to stay below freezing, which can cause treacherous road conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Montgomery County beginning at noon today and ending at 10pm. Between one and three inches of snow is possible. Use caution during the afternoon rush hour, as driving conditions could become dangerous.
