Happy Tofurky Day: Vegetarian Thanksgivings on Rise

Acceptance of the holiday dinner underdog has grown steadily since the product's introduction in 1995.

It's not exactly a vegetarian takeover, but still something for Tofurky lovers to celebrate: The three-millionth Tofurky roast was sold last week, according to a Turtle Island Foods statement. Tofurky—invented by Chevy Chase native Seth Tibbott, The Washington Post reported—was first introduced in 1995 by the small Oregon-based food processor. That year, 500 Tofurky Roasts were sold from about 20 natural foods stores in the Pacific Northwest, according to the statement. Since then, Tofurky acceptance has improved every year. The Tofurky Roast is "a savory combination of organic tofu, wheat protein, plant extracts and spices that give it a taste and texture similar to a boneless breast of turkey stuffed with a wild rice, celery and whole …

I agree. Seriously? This is so unnecessary and only a way to make more money. I have not shopped in any store on Thanksgiving ever and don't plan on changing it now. It's sad that the employees essentially have no choice in the matter and are being practically forced to work on a holiday where they should be home with family and friends. And I don't shop on Black Friday either and especially now …   more ›

Did you attend the store's Wildwood Shopping Center opening benefit?

The new Bethesda location of Chop’t Creative Salad Company opened with a nod to the season’s charitable giving, raising hundreds of dollars for the county’s largest food distribution center. More than 700 customers turned out to the store’s Wildwood Shopping Center opening, Nov. 14, featuring free food in exchange for a $2 donation to the Manna Food Center, according to Allison Anderson, development organizer for the charity group.
