Standford Wilson Jr., 61, died from his injuries, Montgomery County police said.
(UPDATED) A Gaithersburg man was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Derwood on Friday. According to police, Standford Wilson Jr., 61, of the 20000 block of Mattingly Terrace, died at a local hospital from injuries he suffered when his BMW X5 veered off Shady Grove Road and struck several trees and a fence. The crash occurred at around 12:20 p.m., just west of Muncaster Mill Road. Police have not determined what caused Wilson’s vehicle to leave the roadway. The fatal crash shut down the westbound lane of Shady Grove Road, between Mill Run and Muncaster Mill. Police have asked that anyone with information about this crash call 240-773-6620. A fatal accident on Interstate 270 southbound caused major delays Monday morning for commuters in the Gaithersburg-Rockville area.
(Update, 8:20 p.m.) Maryland State Police have identified Maria Durdandal, 50, of Frederick, as the driver who was killed in an early-morning, single-car crash on Interstate 270 southbound near the Shady Grove Road exit, according to an NBC Washington report. Police said the impact of the collision was so severe that portions of the concrete barrier struck by Durdandal's car broke off and landed on northbound I-270, and Durdandal was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report. A man and a woman were struck by a vehicle on Rt. 355 between Oneill and Shady Grove roads, ABC 7 reported.
A man and a woman were struck by a vehicle Monday evening in the southbound lanes of Rt. 355 in Gaithersburg, police told ABC 7. The accident occurred about 8:30 p.m. between Oneill and Shady Grove roads, according to the report. "The man went through the windshield and had to be extricated. Both were taken to trauma centers in serious condition," according to the report. Approximately two hours earlier, a man in his 30s was struck by a vehicle and seriously injured in Germantown. Montgomery County officials broke ground Thursday on the new Travilah Fire Station, according to a report by WAMU.
Montgomery County officials broke ground Thursday on a new fire station at the corner of Shady Grove Road and Darnestown Road, WAMU reported. The Travilah Fire Station will serve the Gaithersburg-Rockville-North Potomac region which has grown rapidly since a temporary station was opened decades ago, fire chief Richard Bowers told WAMU. "We used to call it the little green house on the prairie, because the only thing that was here was the fire station," says Bowers. "There was nothing behind us." The Travilah station will sit across from the University of Maryland, Shady Grove campus, with the county's Life Sciences Center and Shady Grove Adventist Hospital nearby.
