The City Council unanimously approved resolutions declaring the property at 321 Firehouse Lane surplus and authorizing the negotiation of redevelopment plans.
The Gaithersburg City Council unanimously approved a resolution Monday evening declaring the Kentlands Firehouse a surplus property, officially kicking off the revitalization process for the property located at 321 Firehouse Lane. Immediately following the resolution's approval, the Council approved a second resolution authorizing Gaithersburg City Manager Tony Tomasello to negotiate and execute agreements relating to the redevelopment of the property. The Kentlands Firehouse RFP Committee submitted a list of suggested uses for the property to the mayor and City Council in June. Developers for Gaithersburg's Crown development unveiled early plans for a 2.3 acre community and recreation center at Monday evening's mayor and City Council meeting. As part of a public hearing with the City Council and Planning Commission, SunBrook Partners Vice President Bobby Zeiller explained plans for a facility to include a club house, swimming pool, tennis courts and more. "This is an exciting project for us...it's one that will be shared by everyone who lives there and the surrounding community," Zeiller said. The plan proposes a main building between 4,800 and 7,500 square feet, with a maximum height of four stories, according to city documents. The city's retail vacancy percentage for Q4 of 2012 is the lowest since 2008.
As Americans continue to struggle with the economy, local businesses may not be booming. But recent statistics show signs of Gaithersburg returning to pre-recession numbers. The city of Gaithersburg's retail vacancy numbers have shrunk to their lowest percentage since the recession, Gaithersburg Economic Development Director Tom Lonergan said, based on a report of around 300 retail properties from around the city. The report includes both shopping centers and freestanding retail sites, he said. "I'm pleased with the way things are trending right now," Lonergan said. "Obviously there are some spaces that their vacancies are more notiecable and we look forward to getting new tenants in there sooner than later." The numbers represent "the …

Anticipation grew for revitalization of Lakeforest Mall when it was purchased in early September of last year, and within the last week, the mall has sought input from its shoppers on future retailers. On Thursday, Jan. 24, Lakeforest Mall asked its approximately 5,600 Facebook followers a simple question: "What new stores would YOU like to see at Lakeforest?" The thread had received more than 80 comments as of Monday morning, with many shared opinions for the mall's future. Lakeforest Mall planned to remove the thread from its Facebook page Tuesday morning.
