Gaithersburg Police Issue 9 Citations, 131 Warnings In Pedestrian Safety Initiative

Police were stationed at three Gaithersburg intersections promoting pedestrian safety for both walkers and drivers.

In hope of preventing another fatal incident involving a pedestrian, Gaithersburg police took to three high-risk intersections to promote pedestrian safety to walkers and drivers alike. On March 26, from 4-9 p.m., Gaithersburg officers were stationed at Clopper Road at Firstfield Road, Route 355 at Odend Hal Avenue and Great Seneca Highway at Orchard Ridge Drive, according to a news release.  The focus was on pedestrians not properly using crosswalks, drivers failing to stop at clearly marked stop lines and drivers failing to yield to pedestrians. Drivers and pedestrians observed in violation received either a citation or a pre-printed warning.  Officers issued 131 warnings and nine traffic citations to both pedestrians and drivers and …

Report: Cell Phone Ban Could Become 'Primary Offense' While Driving

The ban is expected to pass the Maryland General Assembly.

Drivers in Maryland still using hand-held mobile devices on the road should be prepared to either make the move to hands free or simply keep their cell phones put away. The Maryland Senate voted 40-6 Monday to approve a bill that makes the use of hand-held electronic devices while behind the wheel a "primary offense," The Baltimore Sun reported. Currently, drivers in Maryland can only be cited for using a cell phone if an officer pulls them over for committing another offense — such as speeding. If the proposed ban is approved—which, according to reports, is likely—drivers could be pulled over for using their mobile phones without committing another offense. Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney A. Katz said he could see where it makes sense to …

Letter to the Editor: Raising ICC Speed Limit An 'Insane Idea'

A letter to the editor about raising the speed limit on the Intercounty Connector and other state highways.

The following is a letter from Fred Flaharty, a Montgomery County school bus driver, in regards to a late January story about the Intercounty Connector potentially having a 70 mph speed limit: The bill that would raise the maximum speed limit on interstates and expressways statewide from 65 to 70 miles per hour is an incredibly BAD IDEA!....no...INSANE idea. As a regular daily driver of the ICC both in my personal car (twice per day) and as the driver of a Montgomery County school bus (4 trips per day) I protest in the strongest possible terms this proposed raising of the speed limit on the ICC. There are several important reasons for this the first of which is the road was never designed for faster speeds as are interstate highways. As is…

The traffic engineer who pointed out the references to me assured me that a nominal "design speed" usually has a wide safety margin. Sharper curves should be (as the ICC engineering report stated) have specific warning signage.   more ›

Gaithersburg Police: SHA Plans Changes To Great Seneca-Kentlands Boulevard Intersection

Significant changes could come as early as next year, Gaithersburg police said at a Council in the Community meeting.

After a number of serious accidents, the Maryland State Highway Administration plans significant changes to the intersection of Great Seneca Highway and Kentlands Boulevard/Orchard Ridge Drive, Gaithersburg police told members of the Quince Orchard Park community on Tuesday. SHA began studying the intersection about a year and a half ago, spurred by an incident in which a pedestrian was struck and severely injured, Officer Scott Scarff said at a Council in the Community meeting. The biggest safety concern surrounds the geometry behind the intersection's design, which prevents motorists from clearly seeing pedestrians in the crosswalk, Scarff said. After the study, SHA recommended six changes for the new intersection's design phase, which …

That intersection has ALWAYS baffled me, especially how MIS ALIGNED the left turn lane onto QO Blvd is. It is one of the WORST highway engineering designs I have EVER seen for a suburban area. Thing is, it may be a year and a half off.....BUT THE DAMN THING SHOULD HAVE BEEN DESIGNED BETTER FROM THE START!!! .....if private citizens and the police have had issues with it....don't you think the "…   more ›

Speak Out: How Much Security Should Montgomery County Schools Have?

A school safety meeting is scheduled for Jan. 16.

How much security is the right amount of security for Montgomery County’s public school students? Following the shock of December’s tragic shootings in Newtown, CT, parents and family members of students at Bradley Hills Elementary in Bethesda have written to county leaders asking for security improvements at the elementary school’s temporary location, according to a Wednesday Gazette report. Students and teachers at Bradley Hills currently are housed at the Radnor Center, while the school undergoes modernization, scheduled for completion in August. “Our school has no security system in place and our front door remains unlocked throughout the school day with no mechanism for screening visitors,” parents wrote, according to the report. …

Roaming patrol give's an armed officer the element of suprise, and the intruder the uncertainty of the location of the officer. It's not too much to ask that the one tasked with protecting a school do that by patroling the school. Hope that helps answer your question Joe.   more ›
