Online petitions to secede surround the Free State.
An apparent wave of post-election discontent has found its way online in the form of tens of thousands of people protesting the outcome of the presidential election by stoking the specter of secession. Maryland isn't among the states represented but all four of its neighbors are. Disgruntled residents from dozens of states—from California to New Hampshire and Texas to Florida—are using the Internet to try to invoke their First Amendment right to “petition the government for redress of grievances” by asking the White House to allow their state to withdraw from the Union. The White House's “We the People” program says the administration will respond to any petition that receives 25,000 or more signatures within 30 days. Petitions that have…

BGR: The Burger Joint Reviving its popular campaign from 2008, BGR began offering menu selections celebrating the candidates’ hometowns. BGR has locations in Bethesda, Potomac, Columbia and Gaithersburg. How deep is the Democrats' hold over Maryland?
As President Barack Obama zeroes in on Maryland's sixth consecutive Democratic presidential candidate win, the state's "blue" status may not be as lopsided as history and recent polls otherwise suggest. There is little doubt that Obama is on his way to winning Maryland in next month's election; his double-digit lead in the reliably Democratic state is holding steady in polls conducted since Mitt Romney emerged as his Republican rival. And voters in Maryland haven't picked a Republican for president since George H.W. Bush edged Michael Dukakis in 1988. Public Policy Polling’s poll in May put Obama ahead 58 percent to 35 percent, with 6 percent undecided, and a mid-September poll by Gonzales Research & Marketing Strategies showed Obama …

By Matt Fleming, Capital News Service CHARLOTTE, NC—It's official—Barack Obama is this year's Democratic presidential candidate. Following last night's state roll call, there was nothing left for the president to do but take the stage and accept the party's nomination, while touting the past term's accomplishments and promising future prosperity. "America, I never said this journey would be easy, and I won't promise that now," said Obama. "Yes, our path is harder, but it leads to a better place. We draw strength from our victories, and we learn from our mistakes, but we keep our eyes fixed on that distant horizon, knowing that providence is with us, and that we are surely blessed to be citizens of the greatest nation on Earth." The speech …

By Julye Baughman, Capital News Service Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley used his prime-time slot at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday to make the case for Obama's record on jobs and the economy. The president "is moving America forward, not back," O'Malley repeated, hammering home the Obama campaign's slogan. Five times, he encouraged the crowd to chant along with him and wave their "Forward. Not Back" signs in unison. "Democratic governors, with the support of our president, are leading their states forward—putting job creation first, balancing budgets, protecting priorities, making the tough decisions, right now, to create jobs and expand opportunity," O'Malley said. "Together with President Obama, we are moving America forward, …

Obama's deportation "deferred action" program and Maryland's "Dream Act" are fueling the JSA movement.
It was a watershed week for Maryland's “Dreamers”—a week that brought the first step toward temporary reprieve for more than 1,000 illegal immigrants brought to the country as children, and another step for an immigrant youth movement that is gaining steam as voters stare down a November referendum on in-state tuition for undocumented students. Casa de Maryland, the state’s largest immigrant advocacy group, led a push to get more than 1,000 applicants to Langley Park and Baltimore on Wednesday and Thursday for the onset of President Obama's program to give certain illegal immigrants a two-year shield against being deported. Announced in June, Obama’s “deferred action” program applies to illegal immigrants who: They must also meet one of …

The issue could go before Maryland voters in November.
Facing pressure to take a stand, President Barack Obama on Wednesday said he supports same-sex marriage. In an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts, Obama (D) described his "evolution" on the issue through talks with friends, and reflection on military personnel and members of his own staff who, he said, "are not able to commit themselves in a marriage," adding that "at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married." Excerpts of the interview are scheduled to appear on ABC’s World News with Diane Sawyer on Wednesday evening. The full interview is scheduled to appear on ABC’s Good Morning America on Thursday morning. Gov…

The neighborhood watch captain fatally shot an unarmed teen in Florida, who he says attacked him.
Since the slaying of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed teen in Florida several weeks ago by the captain of a neighborhood watch, the nation has been pondering how it could have happened. George Zimmerman, the man who pulled the trigger, has never been arrested, despite outrage from community members, athletes, celebrities and politicians. Even President Obama has weighed in. Zimmerman is free in part because of Florida's controversial Stand Your Ground law, which give greater legal leeway to people--like Zimmerman--who claim they acted in self-defense. What do you think? Should Zimmerman be in custody while the incident is investigated? Take our poll and let us know.

The Supreme Court is hearing arguments today.
As the United States Supreme Court today considers whether President Obama's health-care law is constitutional, many people have already formed opinions of their own. The law would require everyone to have health-care when it goes into effect in 2014. The justices are hearing arguments on whether or not it is constitutional for the government to require citizens to buy something. What do you think? Take our poll and let us know if you support the law.
