Montgomery Village Gears Up for Its Home Show

Montgomery Village Foundation offers a chance to discuss home improvement with vendors.

Spring is here—though the temperatures outside don't feel like it—and summer is fast approaching. In Montgomery Village, outdoor home improvements projects are getting started. The Montgomery Village Foundation understands this. It knows residents want to undertake projects to improve their homes for the summer months. It just wants home improvements done the right way. On Saturday, MVF will teach homeowners the correct way to make improvements to homes in the Village when it hosts the eighth annual home show at the Lake Marion Community Center. Forty vendors—mostly local contractors, home insurance salesmen and designers—will be in attendance, serving as a source for local homeowners to discuss ideas and learn the best way to make their …

Legislator Goes After Shopping Cart Scofflaws

A bill is proposed on behalf of the Montgomery Village Foundation.

Capital News Service Along with high-profile legislation that would repeal the death penalty and strengthen gun control, Maryland’s General Assembly is considering making it more expensive for people caught stealing shopping carts. The bill would increase the fine from $25 to $100. It came about when the Montgomery Village Foundation, which represents more than 45,000 residents, asked Del. Kirill Reznik (D-Dist. 39) of Germantown, to do something about the number of shopping carts that were being taken from nearby stores and left strewn throughout the community. The current law, which was enacted in 1957, requires store owners to post a sign at each exit informing shoppers that there is a $25 fine for taking a shopping cart off store …

Other Tim, I agree that the first place should be to arrest the shopper, but from the story, that does not occur. And you think that the store does not pass along the $70 each cart that never comes back costs? Cost of doing business. I agree that the wheel locks are a good idea. I think though, that the $25 fine to shoppers should have been enforced. If that's not enforced, it's asinine to raise …   more ›

MVF President Endorses Three Candidates For Board of Directors Election

Bob Hydorn will support Scott Dyer, Sharon Cranford and Elena Peterson in the 2013 Montgomery Village Foundation Board of Directors election.

With four candidates vying for three seats on the Montgomery Village Foundation's Board of Directors, March's election will send one candidate home unhappy. Running for the seats are current board member Scott Dyer, who is seeking re-election; Sharon Crawford, who serves on the Whetstone Board and is running for a seat on the MVF Board for the first time; Elena Peterson, who is currently president of South Village and is running for a seat on the MVF Board for the first time; and Don O'Neill, who is running for a seat on the MVF Board for the third time. Typically, the MVF president remains quiet about the candidates leading up to the election, but this year Bob Hydorn has chosen to speak out, announcing endorsements of three candidates to…

Derek, Bob Hydorn was a candidate in 2012 not 2011. This year, Bob Hydorn has announced by way of this blog that he has horse in the race. This announcement along with his improper and unsuccessful attempt to ambush my candidacy at the start of the Nominating Committee's proceedings on January 9 are enough to make me uncomfortable with his presence in any capacity at the counting of votes on …   more ›

'Great Pumpkin Race' is Back for Year Three

Montgomery Village's family-friendly fall festival will also feature pumpkin pie-baking contest, face-painting, games, food vendors and music.

We'll let you in on a little secret: the upcounty's most... um, compelling ... race of the season doesn't involve presidential politics or the power-play for Maryland's 6th Congressional seat. No, in our humble opinion, the race most worth watching this fall involves dozens of pumpkins, primped—if not pimped out—in a wild assortment of adornment and decoration. Families, HOA boards, Girl Scout troops and senior citizen groups will descend en masse on North Creek Community Center on Saturday for what is fast become Montgomery Village's most-talked-about happening. Don't take our word for it. See for yourself in our video from last year. The Montgomery Village Foundation still has racing kits—gourds, wheels and axles—for sale, and pumpkins …

Warm Up to September Swimming

With heaters installed, Stedwick pool will stay open through the end of the month.

Don't put your swimsuits away just yet. For the first time, one of Montgomery Village's outdoor pools will stay open through September so that the water-loving can swim a balmy 85 degrees, thanks to a newly installed water-heater. The Montgomery Village Foundation installed Stedwick pool's $30,000 water heater this summer, making it the first of the umbrella HOA's seven pools to be outfitted for cool-weather swimming. They flipped the switch Sept. 5, the first day after MVF traditionally shuts its pools down post-summer. Heated pools have made a big splash in Reston, VA, one of the other two "New Town" planned communities along which Montgomery Village was designed. "Their residents really like it, and we're already getting postive …

Scrutiny Coming on Draft of Zoning Code Rewrite

The Montgomery County Planning Board will hold public sessions and work sessions through the end of the year.

Close scrutiny of the draft of Montgomery County's revised zoning code starts on Monday with the county Planning Board, but so far, there's no indication of how it will affect Montgomery Village's unique "Town Sector" zone. The work sessions and public hearings from September through the end of the year. The last time that the county's zoning code was comprehensively rewritten was in 1977. "The revised code is expected to reduce the number of zones, clarify what uses are permitted in each zone, and rethink 1950s-era commercial strips and office parks," according to a statement from the Planning Board. Montgomery Village community leaders have been mulling changes to the Town Sector zone, which county planners created solely for Montgomery …
