Speak Out: College Smoking Bans Spark Debate

Nationwide, more than 800 higher-learning institutions restrict tobacco use, including many nearby.

Add George Washington University to the list of metro-area campuses--including Montgomery College and the University of Maryland--to snuff out smoking on campus as part of a nationwide movement, despite an outcry by some students. The GW campus was the scene of a smoke-in protest earlier this month after school officials decided to bar smoking from the DC campus, The Washington Post reported. Some GW students and faculty are blasting the decision, but school officials are unfazed. "No matter how much science we have to back up what we're saying, there will always be individuals who see this as a restriction on their freedom," GW anti-smoking advocate Julien Guttman told The Post. The school's efforts are the latest in a growing national …

'DREAMERS' Kick Off Tuition Law Fight at UMBC

Supporters say law gives students who are illegal immigrants "a level playing field."

Karina is a "Dreamer." She says she's not the only one. The 22-year-old illegal immigrant and Montgomery College student spoke Wednesday at a news conference at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County to kick off Educating Maryland Kids, an effort to pass the Maryland DREAM Act. "My mother has always told me that education is the path to my success and I very much believe that," said the woman who was only identified by her first name. Karina, who plans on graduating next year with dual associate degrees in general studies and mental health, called for support for a bill that would grant in-state tuition rates to students like herself who are in this country illegally or are considered undocumented immigrants. The ignorance and hate expressed by some bloggers is disgusting - on both sides. Some on the left don't want to recognize that there is a problem and some on the right don't want to recognize that these are human children. Children raised in America as Americans. Some want to threaten these children and take away whatever dignity they can strip from them. Whatever makes Americans an American has …   more ›

Future Montgomery County Workers Should Emphasize Technical Training, Experts Say

Montgomery County would do well to encourage and educate students about mid-level positions if it wants to continue economic success, a panel of experts told the County Council Tuesday.

Montgomery County’s focus on sending students to four-year colleges and universities may be a misguided attempt to keep jobs and workers in the county, according to a panel of economic and workforce development experts. The Montgomery County Council on Tuesday met with the panel for a discussion about the future of Montgomery County's workforce and job opportunities. Responding to the points of Economist Stephen Fuller's presentation last fall, the panel told the council that the dynamic of the nation’s economy is changing. Pushing students to four-year college and beyond may not meet the needs of the county’s future employers, while encouraging mid-level opportunities and job training would be more successful. “Forty percent of the …

The emphasis on these kinds of skills should begin in high school. Montgomery County only has ONE career and technology education center--what we used to think of as votech schools--and that is Thomas Edison High School of Technology, located in Wheaton with Wheaton High School. Most immigrants are honest and law abiding. They are living the American dream the legal way. However, the ones that are illegal need to return home. Time to come clean and admit you broke our laws --- many. You will feel better about yourself if you do the right thing and set a better example for your children.   more ›
