One Magruder's Location To Survive Closures

While the other four Magruder's — including Gaithersburg — are going away, no big changes are planned for the Chevy Chase store by the new owner, The Northwest Current reported.

More good news for fans of the recently sold Magruder's store in Chevy Chase, DC: Not only is the store not closing—it's also not changing all that much, either, The Northwest Current reported. The store—which consists of a liquor store, deli and farmers market—was bought by Ki Yoon, who will keep the same product mix. The only upgrades planned are for things like new carpeting and fixtures, The Current reported on pages 1 and 26 of its Jan. 23 issue. Yoon told The Current that he worked hard to keep the Magruder's name. "It's a D.C. tradition—a great store that has served customers for decades," he told The Current. Even more: All of the employees will stay on at the store, The Current added. Read more about the store's transition to …

Hopefully, a low price fresh grocer will open at the Rockville location. I would rather support the new operator if it is a discount food grocer, than travel into DC.   more ›

1 Meat, 3 Sides

Foodie News: NYC Praises DC Food, ‘Bethesda Hooters’ No More, Magruder’s Says Goodbye

Food and restaurant news from around Montgomery County and adjacent Washington, DC, neighborhoods.

Get caught up with the food scene in Montgomery County and Washington, DC, neighborhoods with "1 Meat, 3 Sides." This week, DC gets a pat on the head from NYC, a Bethesda Hooters-style restaurant gets a strange makeover and locals say goodbye to a decades-old local grocery chain. Washington, DC, finally may have the cultural acknowledgments it has so longed for from New York City. The New York Times recently released its list of the top 46 places to visit in 2013 worldwide, and sitting among tropical getaways and exotic locales is Washington, DC—but the reason DC makes the list might surprise you. The area’s food scene, not its world-class museums, placed DC at No. 44 on The Times' list. “A new food scene to welcome a renewed …

Magruder's Closing All Locations

The supermarkets in Gaithersburg and Rockville are selling all goods at half price, but they may re-open under new ownership in the future.

Magruder's is closing all four of its supermarkets, including Montgomery County's Gaithersburg and Rockville locations. Large signs promoting a 50 percent off sale lined the store's windows Wednesday morning. Shelves normally lined with goods were half empty, as people made a run on discounted items—particularly non-perishable things like paper towels.  "We are currently in negotiations to sell the remaining four locations to a group who wishes to purchase the individual stores and reopen them as quickly as possible and we are working diligently with all parties involved," Magruder's Vice President Gary Bortnick wrote in a letter. The letter, made available at the customer service desk of Magruder's locations (also including Alexandria …

I personally miss it. I am disabled and live on a fixed income. At Magruders I could purchase cheeses, yogurt, and lots and lots of produce cheaply. Giant, Mom's etc. do not always have the vegetables and herbs that Magruders carry. Fresh Market though having great items do not honor the Independence Card (food stamps). It is too costly to shop at Giant, Mom's Whole Foods, Fresh Market etc. when …   more ›

Future Of Gaithersburg Magruder's Unclear

"It is going away," a Magruder's manager said of the Gaithersburg grocery store.

The future of the popular Magruder's grocery store in Gaithersburg may be in doubt, according to local sources. A manager at the Gaithersburg Magruder's, located at 602 Quince Orchard Road, said employees can tell the store will be closing. "They (corporate) didn't come and tell us where and when is going to be the final day, but it is going away," the manager said. The manager asked not to be identified. Rumors of the store's demise recently began circulating among Gaithersburg residents and the city's Director of Economic Development, Tom Lonergan, said he had heard the same thing. Messages left for Magruder's corporate office and a representative from Federal Realty — which owns and manages the Gaithersburg Magruder's facility — were …

I have shopped at Gaithersburg and two Rockville locations. I was lead to believe they would come back to Rockville. I see a Dawson's Market took over that space. I have been shopping at Magruder's since the 70s. I especially enjoyed their fruits and vegetables. I hope they will reorganize and upgrade the markets to compete. God Bless.   more ›
