Gaithersburg police officers stopped about 100 vehicles in one hour for violations during an educational pedestrian sting in Kentlands last week, The Gazette reported. Conducted at the intersection of Market Street and Center Point Way, officers used a handful of volunteers in bright yellow T-shirts to act as pedestrian decoys, according to the report. Drivers were warned after officers saw them driving without wearing seat belts, not yielding to pedestrians and not stopping at the marked line at a stop sign, Gaithersburg police officer Dan Lane told The Gazette. After a number of serious accidents, the Maryland State Highway Administration plans significant changes to the intersection of Great Seneca Highway and Kentlands Boulevard/Orchard Ridge Drive, Gaithersburg police told members of the Quince Orchard Park community on Tuesday. SHA began studying the intersection about a year and a half ago, spurred by an incident in which a pedestrian was struck and severely injured, Officer Scott Scarff said at a Council in the Community meeting. The biggest safety concern surrounds the geometry behind the intersection's design, which prevents motorists from clearly seeing pedestrians in the crosswalk, Scarff said. A small fire outside the 233 Kentlands Boulevard business did not cause any internal damage, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesperson Beth Anne Nesselt said.
A small fire outside Crest Cleaners, located at 233 Kentlands Blvd., was quickly put out Tuesday evening without causing damage, said Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesperson Beth Anne Nesselt. Fire and Rescue services were dispatched to the location at about 5:15 p.m. for the report of smoke in the building, Nesselt said. "Arriving firefighters located a small fire outside the structure," Nesselt told Patch in an email. "It was handled, no fire spread and units were quickly returned to service afterwards." The origin of the fire is unclear at this time, Nesselt said.

The Gaithersburg City Council unanimously approved a resolution Monday evening declaring the Kentlands Firehouse a surplus property, officially kicking off the revitalization process for the property located at 321 Firehouse Lane. Immediately following the resolution's approval, the Council approved a second resolution authorizing Gaithersburg City Manager Tony Tomasello to negotiate and execute agreements relating to the redevelopment of the property. The Kentlands Firehouse RFP Committee submitted a list of suggested uses for the property to the mayor and City Council in June. With a little help from the community, wedding bells could be ringing sooner than anticipated for a Lakelands Park Middle School teacher and her fiancé. Stacy Bureau, a health teacher at the Gaithersburg middle school, and her fiancé, John, are finalists in Mix 107.3's "My Wedding In A Week" contest, along with four other couples. The contest winners receive a $50,000 wedding, planned by Washington Bridal Showcase, but there is a catch: There is only one week to plan the wedding from the end of voting.
