Customers Rush Gas Stations Following Storm

Some gas stations saw long lines of cars over the weekend, while others suffered losses and continue to wait for power to return.

Friday night’s storm affected Maryland residents and business owners in different ways, but just about everyone felt the need to get a full tank of gas. Over the weekend, gas stations that had power were flooded with cars looking for both gas and ice.  Jim Kurtz, the owner of a Takoma Park Shell station on New Hampshire Avenue, said his station saw a tremendous increase in drivers looking to get gas on Saturday and Sunday.  “We had lines down the street all day Saturday and Sunday,” he said. “We usually use around four tankers of gas (8,800 gallons each) during the week, and last week we used six.” Kurtz said the station ran out of gas on Saturday by around 6 p.m., was refueled Sunday morning and ran out again by Sunday night. He says he…

Gas Prices Decline in Time for Independence Day

Your trip to the beach for the 4th may not cost as much in gas as you expect.

As you prepare to take your summer vacations and Fourth of July trips, you’re probably bracing yourself for how much your drive to the beach will cost. The good news is it may not be as much as you expect -- or at least not as much as it used to be.  According to AAA’s daily fuel gauge report, the average national cost of gas was about $3.53 per gallon, the Maryland state average cost was $3.32 per gallon and the average for the D.C. suburbs was $3.35 as of early this morning.  These costs have been steadily declining since the nation experienced a peak average price in April at $3.94 per gallon, AAA Mid-Atlantic says. In addition, the national average has decreased by $0.19 per gallon, the Maryland state average has decreased by $0.26 per…

Speak Out: Are Sky-High Gas Prices Making You Re-Think Your Commute?

As gasoline approaches $4 per gallon, some commuters may consider alternative ways to get to work.

Living in the vicinity of a major city has a lot of perks, but a bumper-to-bumper commute isn't one of them. According to data released by the U.S. Census, it takes Fairfax County residents an average 31.3 minutes to get to work. In Arlington County, it's not much better — 26.5 minutes. Montgomery County residents have some of the longest commutes in the metro region, clocking in at 33.2 minutes. If you think moving into the city might help, think again. It takes D.C. dwellers an average of 29.3 minutes to reach the office. And for many people, this commuting time adds up to gallons and gallons of gas at the pump each week. That's why watching gas prices approach $4 per gallon is so painful. The Associated Press reported on Thursday that …
