Twenty-twelve was a wild year for weather in the Washington metropolitan region. On June 29, the derecho terrorized the area, forcing President Obama to declare Montgomery County a disaster area. In the fall, while we were spared the major brunt, Hurricane Sandy caused widespread flooding, downed trees, food and supply shortages at local stores and numerous school, government and activity cancellations and postponements. Those two weather events may have been the most memorable, but according to WJLA's website, a number of weather records were set in 2012: How does the forecast for the start of 2013 look? After a beautiful weekend, it’s back to being partly dreary today, according to the National Weather Service, but there are some bright spots in the forecast. Don’t expect much sun today. According to NWS, skies will stay cloudy most of the day as temperatures peak in the mid-60s. Expect rain tonight and a drop to the mid-40s. Look for more rain on Tuesday, mostly in the morning. Clouds should clear to mostly sunny skies and a high near 50. Tuesday night, temperatures drop to around freezing. Wednesday will bring mostly sunny skies but chilly temperatures, peaking in the mid-40s. Wednesday night temps again will drop to the low-40s. Tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, showers and flooding are all in the mix of Tuesday's forecast and possibilities for Montgomery County.
Update: 11:57 a.m.: The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Montgomery County and much of the area until 7 p.m. Showers and thunderstorms are expected in Montgomery County Tuesday along and ahead of a cold front. Some of the thunderstorms may become severe and produce damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Periods of heavy downpours are also expected, which could lead to localized flash flooding. The severe weather is likely to run from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., NWS says. Tuesday evening, patchy fog is expected along with showers and a chance of thunderstorms. I know this weather is just nuts. There was like rain, and wind, and sun, and hot, and cold, and snow. Man, it was even dark at night and sunny during the days there were no clouds. And asteroids, we had asteroids. This has never ever happened in history... we had thunderstorms. Scary, scary stuff.
