Greater Greater Washington: Even with a tax increase, driving in Maryland is “a bargain.”
The Maryland House of Delegates passed a bill last week that would increase the state gas tax by more than 20 cents—to 43.7 cents—in July 2016. The news angered and frustrated Maryland residents—including commenters on Patch. One small business owner wrote that he fears the increase could hurt the growth of his business. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Montgomery and Prince George's counties until 1 p.m. today. The alert calls for a mix of freezing rain, sleet and rain, with possible accumulations of less than one inch of sleet and under a tenth of an inch of ice. Temperatures are expected to stay below freezing, which can cause treacherous road conditions. In a statement released by the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) administrator Melinda B. peters urges motorists to "keep their speeds down as lighter traffic can result in increased travel speeds," and "to exercise extreme caution today." The Gaithersburg Police Department has a simple message for travelers during the Thanksgiving holiday: Drive safe. “Officers will be out in force over the holiday weekend focusing on speed enforcement, seatbelt compliance, aggressive and impaired drivers," Gaithersburg Chief of Police Mark P. Sroka said. "Your safety is our number one priority." All that matters is the price of gasoline in Maryland relative to its border states. The legislators can justify the increase all they want, but if commuters fill up in other states where it's cheaper, it won't matter a bit. more ›
