Advocates Form Coalition To Push For Purple Line Funds

'Get Maryland Moving' is calling on the Maryland General Assembly to fund state transportation projects.

A new coalition is advocating for dollars for state transportation projects, including the planned 16-mile Purple Line light rail that would connect Bethesda with New Carrollton, The Washington Post reports. Get Maryland Moving, a coalition of groups, including the Montgomery County and Bethesda-Chevy Chase chambers of commerce, Purple Line Now, Action Committee for Transit, and the League of Women Voters of Maryland, is pushing for state legislators to make new revenue for transportation projects a top priority this legislative session, according to the group’s website. Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. (D-Dist. 27) of Chesapeake Beach has proposed a 3-cent gas tax that would raise about $300 million for transportation …

NOT SO! The D5 goes through the western Bethesda suburbs into Georgetown (not sure where it goes from there) and it is widely used by the khaki-and-polo-shirt crowd. I see plenty of people at the D5 stops every morning and evening. Similarly, the Ride-on that goes to Friendship Heights.   more ›

O’Malley Endorses Bus Rapid Transit for CCT

Corridor Cities Transitway is touted as a backbone of biotech and commercial development between Rockville and Germantown.

Gov. Martin O’Malley has endorsed the use of a bus rapid transit system for Montgomery County’s Corridor Cities Transitway, the proposed north-south corridor from the COMSAT facility near Clarksburg to the Shady Grove metrorail station. The governor’s office made the announcement Friday, more than two years later than O'Malley (D) had expected. Capital costs for the 15-mile corridor were estimated at around $828 million. The system would comprise 68 BRT vehicles characterized by low floors and multiple doors that open at sidewalk level, allowing people to walk on and off as they would on the Metro car.  The BRT vehicles would make 16 stops and will travel mostly in rights of way separate from traffic. Travel time from Shady Grove to COMSAT…

"In December, plans for the BRT drew a lukewarm response from residents who attended a presentation at the Upcounty Regional Services Building. Much of the criticism came from Damascus and Clarksburg residents who were unconvinced BRT would improve their weekday commutes." The County doesn't care if the CCT improves the weekday commutes of the people in Clarksburg and Damascus. They don't care …   more ›

Shifting Ground on Transit

Is Leggett throwing up a red signal on the Purple Line?

The great thing about setting priorities is that it tells people what you believe is most important, meaning more important than all other things. At least that is what the word "priorities" means in all other realms outside of politics. When it comes to our own local leaders, however, the word "priority" apparently means something entirely different. Politicians love to call everything a "priority," which really means nothing is. They obviously do this to keep everyone happy, but the danger in this muddling of the term "priority" is that we lose focus on where scarce taxpayer dollars really should be invested to do the most good.  One need look no further than Montgomery County's apparently shifting priorities on transit to illustrate the…

Shady Grove Life Sciences Center Grows

Officials tout ABL's expansion and news that a Chinese firm is coming to the bioscience hub.

County officials celebrated the opening of the new corporate headquarters of Advanced BioScience Laboratories, Inc. and said that Gov. Martin O’Malley’s announcement that ABL will soon have new neighbors from China in the Shady Grove Life Sciences Center is a sign of Montgomery County's strength as a global player in bioscience. On Friday, County Executive Isiah Leggett joined ABL employees in opening a 72,000-square-foot corporate headquarters that includes manufacturing suites, research labs and space for further expansion. The new three-story facility at 9800 Medical Center Drive cost more than $12 million to build, according to the ABL, which has more than 100 employees and plans to add another 30 in the next 18 months. “That is a …

King Farm Coalition Wants State to Hit the Brakes on the CCT

Supporters say the transitway's timeline needs to stay on course, if not speed up

The Corridor Cities Transitway's mile-long stretch through King Farm in Rockville could throw the proposed mass transit line even further off track. A recently formed coalition of residents in King Farm – who say they were unaware of the details of the CCT's alignment – is calling on state officials to study alternatives to running the CCT down the median of King Farm Boulevard. At the final hearing before Gov. Martin O'Malley decides the Shady Grove-to-Germantown transit line's details next spring, more than two dozen members of the Coalition for the Preservation of King Farm raised concerns on Wednesday about pedestrian safety, "nuisance effects" and blocking off traffic along streets that cross the boulevard. "This will effectively …
