Report: Redskins, Ravens Playoff Games To Net Combined $5M In Tax Revenue

Sunday's home playoff games in Landover and Baltimore will bring in $2.5 million each, state comptroller Peter Franchot told The Washington Post.

While Sunday's football schedule is shaping up to be a dream day for fans of the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens, it's also a financial boon for the state. The Redskins and Ravens games — each hosting Sunday's NFL wild card round playoffs — are expected to net approximately $2.5 million in taxes for Maryland, state comptroller Peter Franchot told The Washington Post . Franchot said the increase in taxes is expected to come from "sales of high-priced playoff tickets, souvenirs, and concessions as well as taxes on bonuses for players and coaches," among other places, according to the report. “When both teams are in the playoffs, there’s a synergistic impact where folks just feel better in Maryland, and when folks feel better there’s…

Some Montgomery County Agricultural Fair attendees got more than just a few prizes or bellyaches.

Nearly 130 people found more than $80,000 in unclaimed funds during the nine days of the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair, Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot announced in a statement. “Ensuring Marylanders get the unclaimed funds they are owed is one of my favorite duties as [comptroller],” Franchot said. “Currently, many families are facing difficult financial decisions and we are all living in uncertain times. So, I am delighted when I have the opportunity to tell an individual that my agency is holding unclaimed funds in his or her name.” This year, 740 fairgoers stopped by the comptroller’s booth and searched for unclaimed property, and 132 found that they had money in their name. The largest claim was $12,180. In total, fairgoers …

State and local agencies offered some free tax advice this morning in Gaithersburg.

It's official, tax season is upon us. Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot visited Family Services, Inc. in Gaithersburg this morning to encourage taxpayers to use all the resources available to them when they file their taxes, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, or EITC. "The EITC is an effective anti-poverty tool," Franchot said. "It helps people move up the economic ladder." Franchot was joined by Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz, Family Services, Inc.
