How would you feel if Clarksburg were to become Montgomery County’s “next major shopping destination?"
For Clarksburg residents, the promise of suburban life should include a placeholder for shopping malls. Retail developers are in negotiations to buy 40 acres of Clarksburg land from Adventist HealthCare, news outlets have reported. Or as The Washington Post put it: “The quiet community of Clarksburg has become ground zero in a battle to build Montgomery County’s next major shopping destination.” (And this from The Gazette: “First, Bennigan’s arrived in Clarksburg. Malls may be next.”) Simon Property Group, one of the former owners of Lakeforest Mall in Gaithersburg, would operate the retail complex, according to The Post. Shopping center developers are eying 40 acres of Clarksburg land Adventist HealthCare hopes to sell, The Washington Post reports. The story named Simon Property Group as a likely buyer, with Fairfax, VA-based Peterson Cos. listed as a competitor. The land for sale was part of the 120 acres Adventist had hoped would become Clarksburg Hospital, serving residents Upcounty, The Post reports. The private school for boys will stay in Gaithersburg
Due to financial woes, The Avalon School will not move forward with plans to build a new campus in Clarksburg, school officials told The Gazette. The Avalon School, a Catholic private school for boys, will continue to operate out of First Baptist Church of Gaithersburg. In 2007, the school was granted a special exception to build on a 10-acre site on Frederick Road (Rt. 355). The site would have been composed of four buildings to accommodate 600 students, according to county planning records. But a sharp drop in enrollment and the failure to secure a construction bond made it "impossible" to repay a $2.2 million loan, school president Richard McPherson reportedly told The Gazette. Grand opening party is Tuesday, Jan. 15
The new Clarksburg Bennigan’s will celebrate its grand opening with a party Tuesday, Jan. 15. The restaurant on Frederick Road, near Stringtown Road, has been open since Dec. 18, 2012, according to the restaurant’s spokespeople. Plans will go before the Montgomery County Board of Education in early 2013, The Gazette reports.
Preliminary plans for an addition to the overcrowded Clarksburg High School are expected to go before Montgomery County Board of Education in early 2013, The Gazette reports. Clarksburg Principal James Koutsos told The Gazette that the two-story addition would ease “overflow” at the school, which is using 11 portable classrooms and may add one or two more next year. In November, the school board approved $11.8 million for the addition. A new cluster of schools in Clarksburg was formed in 2006-07 to accommodate an enrollment surge spurred by a housing growth Upcounty, according to data from the MCPS Division of Long Range Planning. The Germantown Wegmans was once perceived as a threat, The Washington Business Journal reports.
Harris Teeter is coming to Clarksburg, several news outlets have reported. But two years ago, developers were ambivalent about building a Harris Teeter in Clarksburg, for fear that the Wegmans proposed for Germantown would siphon too many Clarksburg shoppers. Citing comments from old newspaper accounts, The Washington Business Journal reported that in 2010 developers said they’d call off plans to build a Harris Teeter in Clarksburg if a Wegmans were allowed to anchor at The Shops at Seneca Medaows in Germantown. Audbon Naturalist Society, Montgomery Countryside Alliance are seeking an amendment to Clarksburg's Master Plan.
Spurred out of concern over the impact of possible development on Ten Mile Creek in Clarksburg, environmentalists have started an online petition urging the county council to amend Clarksburg’s planning guidelines. The Audubon Naturalist Society and Montgomery Countryside Alliance were listed as creators of the petition, which as of Monday had more than 630 supporters. According to the petition letter posted at Change.org: Only a Master Plan amendment will in a timely manner satisfy the needs of Clarksburg residents while achieving permanent protection of Ten Mile Creek and its watershed. This story was originally posted on Sept. 27. — Because his country called him to serve, John Chaney left a farm in Clarksburg for North Carolina in 1943 ready to prove himself as a Marine. But Chaney faced a major hurdle — the color of his skin. Up until 1942, the U.S. Marine Corps had been all white. It was the last branch of the military to accept blacks. Chaney was among nearly 20,000 sent to bsasic training camp at Montford Point, a facility at Camp Lejeune, between 1942 and 1949, where black Marines often suffered racism at the hands of white Marines, racism that continued when they went overseas to fight in all-black units Patch caught up…

Man transported to hospital with traumatic injuries; portion of highway closed
A pedestrian was struck by a truck traveling south on Interstate 270, near Old Hundred Road in Clarksburg. The victim, an adult male, may have been tending to a disabled vehicle. He was transported to the hospital with traumatic injuries, according to Cpt. Oscar Garcia, a spokesman for Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service. Garcia said rescuers were dispatched at around noon. Montgomery County Police and Maryland State Police were investigating the incident. A portion of the highway was shut down, though as of 1 p.m. southbound traffic appeared to be moving slowly, Garcia said. Patch will update this story as more information becomes available.
