Maryland General Assembly Notebook 2013

Miller Gets His Bust

A state senator wants a new state bird; one man's technolgical fortress is his castle; and the Senate president feels snubbed by Obama.

It's not a statue in front of the office building that bares his name but Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller did receive a bust of himself this week courtesy of the Regional Manufacturing Institute. Sen. Kathy Klausmeier, a Perry Hall Democrat, gave a sneak preview of the small, light-weight bust of Miller moments before presenting it to the Senate's top dog. "You can't have too much Mike Miller," Klausmeier said. The technology is similar to what was used in a scene of Jurassic Park 3 where a copy of a velociraptor's larynx was recreated. The institute offered legislators in Annapolis the opportunity to have themselves scanned into a computer and get busts of themselves. Miller seemed impressed with the petite bust but joked that it …

Of course the best way to watch this year's Superbowl is to be there at the New Orleans Dome. Rumour has it that there are 4 charter Southwest Airlines flights leaving BWI Airport for New Orleans jammed full of Ravens Fans; a veritable Flying Ravens Roost. The cost is $1,000. a pop and that does NOT include the price of Game tickets. I look forward to booking a flight to see the Redskins play in …   more ›

Should Redskins Fans Back the Ravens in the Super Bowl?

At least one Washington Post writer thinks so.

As the Ravens prepare to face the 49ers in Sunday's Super Bowl—and with the Redskins having long since begun their own off-season—Washington fans are once again faced with a conundrum: should they back Baltimore? It's a question many Washingtonians confronted in recent seasons as the Ravens racked up four playoff appearances to the Redskins' none. But with the arrival of rookie sensation Robert Griffin III and the team's first signs of postseason life since 2007, has the calculus changed? For one Washington Post writer, the answer is still simple: Hail to the Ravens.  Craig Timberg, an admitted Baltimore fan, says it's a no-brainer given the Ravens' many parallels to the Lombardi-winning Redskins clubs of yore: a stout defense, a great …

Ravens vs. Redskins: Who Wins On Sunday?

Who will win the battle of the Baltimore-Washington, D.C., regional foes?

The brawl between the beltways takes place Sunday in Landover. We can only hope it takes place on the field and not in the stands or at your local bar. But speaking of which, check out the scripted banter between the two fans in the YouTube video we've included. Where do your allegiances lie? Are you an RGIII fanatic, too? Or do you view the Redskins "as the other team from Maryland," like the Ravens fan said? TELL US: Who are you pulling for on Sunday and why? Give us a score prediction and a key for the game in the comments. — At the game or watching it with friends? Add your fan photos to this post to show your true colors.

SPEAK OUT: Rate the Redskins', Ravens' Week 1 Performance

The Redskins stunned the Saints in New Orleans, 40-32; the Ravens rolled over the Cincinnati Bengals at home on Monday Night Football.

Could week 1 have possibly gone any better for the two NFL teams separated by merely an hour on I-95? The Washington Redskins were road underdogs featuring a rookie, albeit highly-touted rookie, quarterback playing in a hostile environment against a former Super Bowl MVP quarterback. The Baltimore Ravens faced adversity of their own, missing the NFL's 2011 Defensive MVP, Terrell Suggs, and coping with the recent death of former owner Art Modell. Both teams passed week 1 tests with flying colors. The Redskins, led by No. 2 overall pick Robert Griffin III, stunned the New Orleans Saints, 40-32, at the Louisiana Superdome. The Ravens rolled over the Cincinnatti Bengals on Monday Night Football, 44-13. We want to know your impressions on the …

I certainly had no expectation of that Sunday performance by the Redskins and really had considered the Saints a "lock" to win. It's a bit too early to lose perspective but the potential is exciting.   more ›
