Closing exhibits will not be replaced to save on security costs.
Exhibits that are scheduled to close at the Hirshhorn, National Museum of African Art and Smithsonian will not be replaced due to sequestration, according to a Smithsonian spokeswoman. Linda St. Thomas told the DCist website that “in terms of the security of our visitors, bigger crowds require more security,” but she added, “Every museum is still open every day.” The actual number of exhibits accessible to visitors at open museums are yet another casualty of sequestration. On April 16, Smithsonian Secretary G. Wayne Clough warned Congress of the potential effects of sequestration on the area’s museums - gallery closings, reduced educational program offerings and building maintenance issues. The city of Gaithersburg announced two new spring art programs to be held at the Kentlands Mansion and Gaithersburg Arts Barn, respectively: Experience Beethoven, Brahms and Weber at Kentlands Mansion Experience the sublime majesty of Beethoven, the passionate richness of Brahms and the charming virtuosity of Weber in the intimate warmth of Kentlands Mansion. Music at the Mansion’s “Reflections: Chamber Music of Beethoven, Brahms and Weber for Clarinet, Cello and Piano” takes place on Friday, April 19, 2013, at 8 p.m. This program highlights the influence of Beethoven’s great legacy on Brahms and Weber. The city of Gaithersburg released the following news this week: Habit-Forming Musical Nunsense A-Men! Takes Arts Barn Stage In partnership with Rockville Musical Theatre, the Arts Barn presents the musical comedy Nunsense A-Men! The show runs April 5 through 21, 2013, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Admission is $18, $16 for City of Gaithersburg residents. This show contains adult language and parental guidance is suggested. Described as “Mrs. Doubtfire enters the convent,” Nunsense A-Men! replaces the traditional female cast ofthe original Nunsense with men playing the Little Sisters of Hoboken. Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley recently announced the “Maryland Love Project,” an on-line portal where Maryland residents can express what they most appreciate about their state. Born of a partnership between the State of Maryland, the Baltimore Love Project, the Digital Harbor Foundation’s STEM Engine program and the Maryland State Arts Council, the Maryland Love Project is designed to “showcase all of the reasons why people love Maryland while shining a light on the important role that the arts and technology play in our communities,” O’Malley said in an annoucement. Some of Chris Noel's recent work is on display through Jan. 27 at The Artists’ Gallery in Frederick, The Gazette reported.
A Montgomery Village artist is taking his work north. Chris Noel, known for using bits of trash or recycling in his three-dimensional paintings, will have 20 pieces on display through Jan. 27 at an exhibit at The Artists’ Gallery in Frederick, The Gazette reported. "These paintings are basically collections of various items that no longer seem useful (trash)," Noel says on his website. "The sad thing is that I often don't need to look any further than my own home or office to find an abundance of material. It's almost inconceivable to me how much waste our culture manages to generate."
