State Police Respond to Increased Traffic Fatalities with Targeted Patrol

The beltway and other high traffic roads will see an increase in trooper presence this weekend.

  Maryland State Police will be on the roads in full force this weekend, targeting potential crashes before they happen. If you’re planning a last-minute getaway before Montgomery County heads back to school, be aware that 22 Maryland State Police Department barracks will be alert and looking for aggressive driving, speeding, distracted or impaired drivers and seat belt violations. The effort comes in response to an increase in traffic fatalities. Traffic-related deaths are up 13.5 percent across the country for the first quarter of 2012, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Police Target Aggressive Driving in August

The "Smooth Operator" initiative will run through Aug. 18 across Montgomery County.

Before you let your road rage take over, you may want to take note that police are targeting aggressive drivers this month. Montgomery County’s "Smooth Operator" initiative continues through Aug. 18. During that time, local police departments will try to stop unsafe behaviors. "The goal is to alert the community to the problems of aggressive driving," Lucille Baur, spokesperson for Montgomery County told Patch in June. "People are in a hurry, they tend to speed, tend to change lanes frequently, tend to tailgate—these are all aggressive driving behaviors. A person can be just caught up in their own personal stress and not even be thinking that they're breaking the law, they're just so focused on getting where they want to be quickly." …
