Longshot Oxbow Wins Preakness Stakes

Orb, the Kentucky Derby winner, finished fourth.

Oxbow, a 15-1 longshot, went nearly wire-to-wire to win the 138th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday giving trainer D. Wayne Lukas the all-time lead in Triple Crown race victories with 14. The bay colt, ridden by 50-year old Gary Stevens and owned by Calumet Farm, took the lead early from Goldencents and won the $1 million Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown by 1 ¾ lengths holding off Itsmyluckyday and Mylute in 1:57.54. Oxbow also ended hopes for a Triple Crown winner for another year. Orb, the winner of the Kentucky Derby, never got started from his No. 1 post position and finished a disappointing fourth. When Is the Preakness?

The 138th running of the Baltimore tradition will be held this Saturday.

We're in the final stretch before the 138th running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Here's what you need to know. When is it? The Triple Crown race will be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Pimlico. NBC (WRC, WBAL) and Horse Racing Radio Network (WSPZ-AM in Washington is the only area affiliate) will have the call, which will also be streaming on the radio network's website. The first post on the day is at 10:45 a.m. Tickets? They are still available. Infield tickets are $60. Admission to the grandstand starts at $25, with box seats starting at $110. Sports Report: Top-Seeded Gaithersburg Baseball Eliminated and More

No. 1 Gaithersburg was eliminated in the regional quarterfinal by No. 9 Wootton. Quince Orchard's boys and girls lacrosse teams fall short in regional semis.

With a No. 1 seed comes lofty expectations, and unfortunately for the Gaithersburg High School varsity baseball team they were unable to be met. After a first-round bye to the 4A West region quarterfinals, the top-seeded Trojans were eliminated by No. 9 Wootton, 7-3. Gaithersburg squandered a potentially easier opportunity to advance through the regional bracket. Wootton will host No. 12 Northwest in the 4A West semifinals opposite No. 2 Bethesda Chevy Chase and No. 11 Churchill. Sports Report: Gaithersburg Schools Start Slow In State Tournaments

Boy's and girl's lacrosse and softball teams from Gaithersburg area schools struggled in the first round of the state tournament.

State title dreams ended for a number of Gaithersburg area teams in the first round of their respective state tournaments. The boy's lacrosse, girl's lacrosse and softball teams from Gaithersburg, Quince Orchard and Watkins Mill high schools posted a combined 2-3 record in round one. Boy's Lacrosse No. 6 Gaithersburg High School was upset by No. 11 Thomas Johnson, 13-4. Thomas Johnson travels to Gaithersburg Friday to challenge No. 3 Quince Orchard at 7 p.m. The Cougars advanced to the regional quarterfinal with a first-round bye. Trojans Secure No. 1 Seed In State Baseball Tournament

Gaithersburg High School is the No. 1 seed in the 4A West region. Quince Orchard, and Watkins Mill (3A) also qualified.

They say to be the best, you have to beat the best, and in the Maryland state baseball tournament, the 4A West region goes through Gaithersburg. The Trojans earned the No. 1 overall seed in the bracket—released Wednesday by the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association—and nearby Quince Orchard High School is the No. 4 seed. Watkins Mill High School is the No. 11 seed in the 3A West division bracket. Gaithersburg secured a first-round bye and will face the winner of No. 8 Walter Johnson and No. 9 Wootton in the regional quarterfinals. Report: Quince Orchard Transfer Racking Up Early Scholarship Offers

WaPo: Adam McLean, a sophomore transfer defensive lineman, has received scholarship offers from three prominent Division I football programs.

Adam McLean has gone from one Gaithersburg school to another, and he's taking a strong football pedigree with him. The former Avalon School defensive lineman will play for Quince Orchard in the fall, and he's already received a number of scholarship offers, The Washington Post reported. Florida State, Nebraska and Virginia Tech have all made offers to the 6-foot-2, 260-pound standout, according to the report. Scouting service Rivals.com reports McLean has also received interest from Georgia, Maryland, Missouri, NC State, Ohio and Rutgers. As Maryland state lacrosse tournament games get underway Wednesday, local varsity softball teams have to wait an extra day to kick off their 2013 run to the state championship. News Nearby: Rockville Native Invited to Olympic Hockey Team Selection Camp

Haley Skarupa is one of 25 American forwards to be considered for the 2014 Winter Olympic team.

  A Rockville native may be Olympic Village-bound. Haley Skarupa, 19, was selected to attend the U.S. Women's National Ice Hockey Team Selection Camp, which will be held at Olympic Center in Lake Placid, NY, this June.  Skarupa, who attends Boston College, is one of 41 women headed to the camp. Twenty-one players will make the official Olympic roster in late December.  The Wootton High graduate has been playing on the ice since she was 6 years old, she told Patch last year. Since 2009, Skarupa played with the U.S. Women's National Team, scooping silver and gold medals in 2010 and 2011 at the International Ice Hockey Federation's World Women's U18 Championships.  Olympic gold is the ultimate goal for Skarupa, who said that she has her …
