Though just outside Montgomery Village's borders, roughly three-quarters of the students are from the Village—the rest live in Gaithersburg and Germantown. Montgomery Village Middle School and Neelsville Middle School in Germantown feed into WMHS, while the cluster's elementary schools are South Lake, Stedwick, Watkins Mill and Whetstone.

More than one-quarter of the Whetstone's professional personnel have at least 15 years of experience. The school also hosts MCPS's Learning and Academic Disabilities program and the Preschool Education Program.
