Watkins Mill Track Has Region, State Meets in Their Sights

Wolverines finished third last week in men's countywide championship.

The Watkins Mill men’s track team is heading to their state regional meet today and tomorrow looking to build on their third-place finish in last week’s Montgomery County championships.

In defense of their county crown from last year, Watkins Mill won four out of 18 events at the May 10 meet, hosted by Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda. Only Richard Montgomery had more wins, with five.

  • Watkins Mill won the 4 x 100 relay in 43.9 seconds, edging out Magruder by one one-hundredth of a second. Springbrook finished third at 44.05 seconds.
  • The 4 x 200 relay dusted the field with a time of 1:29.77 seconds—more than a second faster than Magruder and nearly two seconds faster than third-place Paint Branch.
  • William Yougnia won the 200-meter dash in 22.29 seconds, beating out Churchill’s Micah Spencer-Phillips (22.54) and Blair’s Kevin Fallet (22.61).
  • After winning the 55-meter hurdles this winter, Damiete Roberts added the 110-meter hurdles last week, with a time of 15.01 seconds—two one-hundredths of a second faster than Quince Orchard’s Eric Bishop and a half-second faster than Abdel Ndam of Kennedy.
  • A pair of promising sophomores placed in the field events. In the discus, Patrick Schlosser—who set a school record last month—took third last week with a throw of 140 feet, 7 ½ inches. Dontay Hears also scored a third-place finish, by posting 43 feet, 1 ½ inches in the triple jump.
  • Watkins Mill also scored points from sixth-place finishes in the 4 x 800 relay and Daniel Upson in the long jump (20 feet, 1 inch), and Damiete Roberts’s eighth-place finish in the triple jump (41 feet, 6 inches).

Winston Churchill High School took the men's team title. Despite winning only two events, the Bulldogs amassed 82 points, enough to edge out Richard Montgomery's 79.2 points. Watkins Mill’s 59 points put them in third. Northwest (54.33) finished fourth and Quince Orchard (50) took fifth.

In the 3A West Region championship today and tomorrow at Linganore High School, Watkins Mill will be looking to repeat the strong showings and get some better performances in a few events that came up short of their high standards. The top four finishers in each event move on to the state championships May 28 at Morgan State University.
