NFL News: Redskins Have a New Coach, Reports Say

Jay Gruden expected to replace Mike Shanahan as the head coach of the Washington Redskins.

It will likely be confirmed at an afternoon news conference, but it appears the Washington Redskins search for a new head coach ended Thursday when they agreed to hire Jay Gruden, reportsESPN.

Gruden, most recently the offensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals, told the Bengals that he is leaving for the Redskins, theWashington Post reports. Gruden agreed to a five-year contract with the Redskins, according to the newspaper.

ESPN says he is expected to be introduced by the Redskins on Thursday afternoon.  The Redskins have called a 4 p.m. ET news conference.

The team's website says that Gruden interviewed for the top coaching job, but doesn't say whether he has been hired or that a selection has been made.

A year ago, Coach Mike Shanahan led the Washington Redskins to the NFL playoffs. This year, a 3-13 record led to his firing on Dec. 30, reports NFL.com. Shanahan's job security became a topic of speculation due to his frosty relationship with star quarterback Robert Griffin III, says ESPN. The coach benched Griffin for the the last three games of the season, reportedly to help him heal for next year Griffin declined to speak to the media while he cleaned out his locker last week.
