Lady Trojans Claim Regional Championship With Win Over Northwest

Gaithersburg High moves on to State Semifinals at UMBC.

The Gaithersburg girls basketball team is headed back to the state semifinals for the second year in a row.

The top-seeded Lady Trojans punched their ticket to UMBC’s RAC Arena after capturing the 4A West Region crown Saturday with a 65-51 victory over No. 2 seed Northwest in Silver Spring.

Gaithersburg senior Kara Marshall scored a game-high 20 points to lead four Lady Trojans in double figures. Jackie Jackson added 14 points; Sarah Seipp scored 12 points and Colleen Marshall finished with 10 points.

Meanwhile, a pair of talented juniors led Northwest in scoring as Camry Torian had 15 points and Carla Batchelor finished with 13 points.

After trailing by eleven points at halftime, Northwest went on an 8-3 run and narrowed the Trojans' lead to 36-30 on a pair of free throws by senior Katelyn Porter (9 points). However, Gaithersburg rallied and went on a 13-4 run to close out the third quarter.

“They are very talented,” said Northwest head coach Rob Smith. “They run that spread offense really well. They knocked down some shots. They get a little bit of a lead and it’s tough to come back.”

Gaithersburg remained unbeaten at 23-0 and will continue its quest to capture the school’s first state title in girls basketball while Northwest had its consecutive game winning streak snapped at 19. The Germantown school finished the season at 20-5.

The Lady Trojans have already equaled last season’s win total of 23 victories and remain two wins shy of capturing the ultimate prize.

“We haven’t accomplished anything yet,” said Gaithersburg head coach Adrian McDaniel. “We’re 23-0; we have two more to go.”
