DiG PiNK! with Wolverines Volleyball

Wednesday's match against Bethesda-Chevy Chase will raise breast cancer awareness and collect donations for the Side-Out Foundation.

Jenny Pryphun is an ESOL teacher at Watkins Mill High School and mother of one of the volleyball team's senior leaders.

The Watkins Mill Wolverines volleyball team is sponsoring our third annual DiG PiNK match on Wednesday against Bethesda-Chevy Chase. This fall, thousands of teams from around the country will be participating in the Dig Pink National Breast Cancer Awareness Rally. High school teams will be promoting breast health education as well as raising funds to help eradicate breast cancer. Come to Wednesday’s match wearing pink to support these efforts.

The team is dedicating this year’s event to the memory of one of its loyal fans and parents, Jane Hydorn. Jane was a tremendous supporter of the team while her daughter Lauren played here at Watkins Mill. At one point during her fight against breast cancer, she went from surgery straight to one of the Wolverines’ matches, preferring to be at the game in support of the team rather than at home recuperating.

The team remembers Jane after each match when they dig into the “Candy Bucket,” a tradition she started at Watkins Mill. Now, “Jane’s Candy Bucket” is passed down from a senior to an underclass player to continue the tradition and memorialize Jane’s dedication to the team.

Jane lost her battle against breast cancer in March 2008. Jane’s son Jason is a junior at Watkins Mill. Her widower Bob Hydorn is board president of the Montgomery Village Foundation.

Last year we were able to raise $1,130. Our goal is to raise $1,000. Please help. The JV game starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by varsity at 6:30 p.m.

Proceeds will benefit the Side-Out Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in the Washington, D.C. metro region, that has sinve 2004 raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Breast Cancer research through volleyball tournaments, clinics and rallies. Funds are devoted to targeted therapies and molecular profiling, a hotbed of research activity. Side-Out also devotes a portion of the funds to “Life with Cancer” support organizations.
