Boys' Lacrosse Makes it Eight Wins With Two to Play

8-4 defeat of Springbrook primes Watkins Mill for push to claim high playoff seed.

Although Watkins Mill boys' lacrosse jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the second quarter last night against Springbrook, there was plenty of rust left over from the team's two-week hiatus around Spring Break—unkempt play that also showed in their hard-fought win over Blake two nights ago.

So when Springbrook cut the lead last night to 5-3 while Watkins Mill's offense went flat in the second and third quarters, it fell on the defense to secure the Wolverines' eighth win of an already surprising season. And that the defense did, holding Springbrook scoreless for more than 20 minutes, until the Blue Devils put in a meaningless goal with less than two minutes to play.

Springbrook goalie Dustin Silvia made nine second-half saves to keep the game in reach, but Shane Soghomonian broke through for a goal in the third quarter and Kyle Khuen iced the victory with two scores in the fourth.

For Khuen and the Wolverines' four other seniors, the eight wins this season equal the team's total in their three years as underclassmen.

That resurgence will be put to the test in a pair of  tough home games to close the regular season, the first at 7 p.m. Friday against Poolesville, followed by senior night on Tuesday against Paint Branch.

The five seniors have never beaten either school in varsity play, including three losses to Poolesville by a combined 34-13. The Falcons are scoring nearly 12 goals per game and have amassed a 6-3 record playing a much tougher schedule than Watkins Mill’s—Poolesville's losses came against perennial powerhouses Quince Orchard, Churchill and Walter Johnson.

If the prospect of a little Wolverine payback isn't enough of an incentive, maybe this will be: A strong finish ahead of next week's playoffs could catapult Watkins Mill to as high as the No. 2 seed.
