VIDEO: Look Who's Signing, Too

Class at Kehilat Shalom's preschool uses sign language to bring parents and infants closer together.

The Kehilat Shalom Early Childhood Center is teaming up with the Pediatric Development Center in Olney to help parents communicate with their infants and toddlers before they've uttered so much as their first Ma-Ma and Da-Da.

In what is a first for the Montgomery Village preschool, the jointly run class teaches sign language to children as young as 7 months old. Advocates say that the practice cuts down on toddlers’ tantrums and forges closer bonds with mom and dad.

The current eight-week session is about halfway through, but another is in the works. The session costs $150 for members of Kehilat Shalom and $175 for non-members. For more information, call 301-869-1929 or go to www.ksecc.org.
