Heads Up Parents: School Year Could End June 19

The brutal winter has caused students to miss nine days of school so far this year, which could push the end of classes back a week.

No decisions have been made yet, but parents in Montgomery County should be aware that the school year could be extended until June 19.

The brutal winter has caused the county’s public schools to miss nine days of classes, The Washington Post reports, five days more than built into the year’s calendar. State law requires at least 180 days of instruction.

Without receiving a waiver from the state, the school system would have to add five days to the calendar, extending classes beyond the current June 12 end date to June 19.

School officials told the Post Friday they have started publicizing the possibility of an extended school year because they want parents to know more about the process. There are no plans to change spring break, which starts April 14.

A decision will be made about applying for a state waiver once the snow is gone, and the state begins accepting requests.
