Grab a Bite, Benefit Watkins Mill Sports

"Super Fundraiser" is tomorrow night at the Silver Diner in Lakeforest Mall.

Are you an admirer of Watkins Mill athletics? Do you plan on eating dinner tomorrow night? Take care of both by grabbing some grub at the Silver Diner in Lakeforest Mall.

Watkins Mill die-hards who dine from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow night will be giving Wolverines athletics a big boost as the restaurant donates 20 percent of those proceeds to the athletic department. 'Rines fans can expect to be greeted by familiar faces. Students will be hosts and will help with guests’ service.

This is the second "Super Fundraiser" the Lakeforest Silver Diner has held for Watkins Mill. Last year's event benefitted the school’s programs for special needs students.

Silver Diner manager and Watkins Mill team mom Deborah Sanchez is spearheading the event. She and school volunteer Valerie Trabue came up with the idea last year. Sanchez has reared two Watkins Mill athletes—senior Carlos and Maria, a junior—and she's been campaigning for months to spread the word about tomorrow’s dinner.

"I love Watkins Mill. … So, I just want to be able to help whatever part of Watkins Mill we can help," Sanchez said.

Athletic Director Reggie Spears said the school could use new basketball backboards, updated lighting in the gymnasium and help with the school’s field maintenance fund. Spears said fundraisers help the school ensure that student athletes have what they need to compete in—and enjoy—high school sports.

"It's very important. A lot of it is just the life lessons learned playing organized high school sports," Spears said. "A lot of it is character building. A lot of it is just pushing yourself to a limit and setting goals. A lot of it's building responsibility and making right decisions, right choices."
