DiG PiNK! with Watkins Mill Volleyball

Tonight's breast cancer fundraiser has become a Lady 'Rines tradition.

One special night every year, Watkins Mill High School's gynasium fills with a sea of pink as the girls' volleyball team takes up a cause that hits especially close to home: the DiG PiNK fundraiser for breast cancer research and awareness.

This year's match pits the Lady 'Rines against the Clarksburg Coyotes tonight at Watkins Mill. JV starts at 5:30 p.m. followed by varsity at 6:30 p.m.

Watkins Mill is one of thousands of teams from around the country taking part in the DiG PiNK National Breast Cancer Awareness Rally, in which players and coaches raise funds and promote breast health education.

At Watkins Mill, the DiG PiNK game honors the memory of Jane Hydorn, a volleyball parent who lost her battle with cancer four years ago. Jane started the team's "Candy Bucket" tradition as a post-game motivator. Now, the “Candy Bucket” is passed down from a senior to an underclass player at the end of each season, in remembrance of Jane’s dedication to the team.

Proceeds benefit the Side-Out Foundation, a national nonprofit based out of the Washington, D.C. region that has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for breast cancer research through volleyball tournaments, clinics and rallies. Funds are funnelled toward research into targeted therapies and molecular profiling. Side-Out also devotes a portion of the funds to local and national “Life with Cancer” support organizations.

If you can't make it to the game, tax-deductable donations can be made online by clicking here.
