YOUR TURN: Was Romney Right About the 47 Percent, or Will This Doom his Campaign?

Mother Jones released a video of Mitt Romney telling a private audience that 47 percent of Americans are dependent on the government and will never vote for him. Was this a ruinous gaffe, or has Romney told a hard political truth?

A secret video obtained by Mother Jones magazine has rocked the political world. In that video, Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney said 47 percent of Americans believe they are victims, are dependent on the government and will never vote for him. He went further, saying he wasn't worried about them. The magazine released a portion of the video Monday.

In a late night press conference Monday, Romney said the comments were not "elegantly stated," but were part of a larger conversation about the role of personal responsibility. Romney went on to say the comments were a reflection on "the political process of winning an election, and, of course, I want to help all Americans—all Americans—have a bright and prosperous future."

Mother Jones said it would release the full video by late Tuesday afternoon. UPDATE: Mother Jones posted the full video just after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Do you think the video shows Romney's true feelings about half of the American electorate, or was this an out-of-context snippet? Will this hurt Romney's chances of willing the election, or is it one blip in a very long campaign? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

This will hurt Romney as much as the "Bitter Clingers" comment hurt Obama in '08.

His campaign is already at the bottom, the only way to go is up. Romney is the worst kind of American though, being unable to see how much this country has given him. Romney's own father was on welfare and now he complains about people on welfare. The elderly mostly vote for Republicans even though they shouldn't. Maybe they all listen to talk radio moron who sell hatred and anger? Many of the 47% Romney is talking about are elderly folks just trying to get by. The other half are the working poor. These people need help because the Republicans policies of lowering taxes and deregulating have failed them. We have lost millions of jobs to outsourcing and deregulation caused the housing crash. Nothing Republicans of today have to offer is going to help our situation. Teaching greed and selfishness is what the anti-Christ would do.Republicans have turned out to be torture for our great country....and it will be a long while before I vote for one. I'm not going to touch a Republican with a 10 ft stick. Republicans are poison.

What surprised me the most was that 47% of Americans are in some way dependent on the government. That is an amazing number and although the focus has been how this will effect Romney's election bid, nobody has questioned this number. Think about that for a moment! How can the country sustain that number go forward? I understand that many included within that number are retirees entitled to their Social Security and Medicare for their lifetime of hard work and that entitlement for the most part is based/funded (at least partially) on the retiree's and their employer's contributions these programs. I'd like to know the percentage of that 47% that are not retirees collecting SS or getting Medicare benefits. That will likely be the scariest number of all. All of this chatter about the US becoming a socialist country...sounds like we are already there.
