Report: School Spending Law, Sequester May Make for $300M Budget Gap

Early predictions show a significant budget shortfall for the next fiscal year.

Though predictions are early, it looks like Montgomery County lawmakers may have to close a $300 million budget gap for fiscal 2015, which would begin July 1, 2014, The Washington Post reports

Part of the gap is being attributed to the rising costs of a growing school system, The Post reports. A state funding law requires per-pupil spending to at least match the previous year's amount. Plus, part of the cost of teacher pensions was shifted from the state's budget to the county's budget last year. 

In preparation for the sequester's affect on Montgomery County, the county is planning for $65 million less in tax revenues for that year, according to The Post
