Montgomery County Senator Earns Educational Leadership Award

Sen. Nancy King was honored by the Maryland Family Network on Wednesday.


Maryland Sen. Nancy King (D-Dist 39) of Montgomery Village received the 2013 Nancy S. Grasmick Leadership Award in Early Care and Education.

The Maryland Family Network presented the honor Wednesday at the Universities of Shady Grove in Rockville.

The award is named for former state schools superintendent Nancy S. Grasmick, who retired from the Maryland Department of Education in 2011 and has still been involved with education initiatives since.

Grasmick is a Maryland Family Network board member.

King—a former president of Montgomery County public schools’ board of education—supported the expansion of public pre-kindergarten and home visiting services, to promote Maryland’s successful application for the federal Early Learning Challenge Grant, and passed laws to better protect children in child care.

She is chairwoman of the joint committee on children, youth, and families and is a member of the senate budget and taxation committee’s education subcommittee.
