Montgomery County Executive Hopeful Duncan Wants 'Infusion' of Money for Schools

The former county executive vying to get his old job back says he would build new schools.

Funding a high-quality public school system that's rapidly expanding gets more expensive each year in Montgomery County. The past several years have seen Montgomery County Public Schools receive the minimum allowed under a state funding law—something that Former County Executive Doug Duncan, who will run against incumbent Isiah Leggett next year, says he will change.

He told The Gazette that he would push for "a very large infusion of funds" to pump into the school district, partially to build new schools.

The schools budget for fiscal 2014 is $2.23 billion, a 2.6 percent increase over the previous year and the minimum allowed under "maintenance of effort," a state funding law that requires local districts to maintain per-pupil spending amounts each year.
