Installation of Pepco Smart Meters

The Maryland Public Service Commission (“PSC”) has authorized Pepco to install new “smart” meters for its Maryland customers and Pepco has begun installation in Gaithersburg. A smart meter is a digital device that records electric usage in hourly increments and allows two-way communication signals between the meter and Pepco.

Approximately one to four weeks prior to installation of the meter, Pepco is required to send you a letter and fact sheet explaining the process for exchanging your meter. The city has received complaints that residents have received this letter and fact sheet after the meter was installed. Notice of these complaints has been filed with the PSC.

On the day of installation, a Pepco contractor is required to knock on your door to let you know that they are performing your meter switch. If no one is home, the contractor is to leave a door hanger either announcing that the new meter has been installed or requesting that you contact them to schedule an appointment to change your meter.

For more information on smart meter installation, including how to opt out, visit the city of Gaithersburg website.
