Deadline Nears for Congressional Hopefuls

So far, nine candidates have signed on to unseat the 6th District's Republican incumbent, Roscoe G. Bartlett.

As the deadline to enter the U.S. Congressional primary approaches, 10 people have filed for candidacy as of late Monday, according to Maryland State Board of Elections records online.

In order to appear in the April 13 primary election, would-be candidates must file by 9 p.m. Wednesday. Friday is the deadline to drop out of the race. 

Democrats and Republicans have been lining up to claim the redrawn , a far-reaching swath of the state that now includes Montgomery Village in with much of Western Maryland.

Among Democratic candidates,Washington County attorney Charles Bailey and Montgomery County business executive John Delaney — former Montgomery County Executive Doug Duncan was an early Delaney supporter — are the most recent filers, according to elections board records.

Meanwhile, Amy Pooran, wife of Democratic candidate and Frederick County doctor Milad Pooran, has been posting updates on her husband’s efforts abroad at Daily Kos. Pooran is a critical care doctor and Lieutenant Colonel in the Air National Guard. He put his campaign on pause after being deployed to Germany to care for wounded soldiers, .

One name not among the : Maryland GOP Chairman Alex X. Mooney, who as of Monday evening, had not officially filed with the election board despite recent moves that suggest he intends to.

Last week, Mooney announced leaders for his exploratory committee, a crew that includes Del. Neil Parrott, the Hagerstown lawmaker and a leading opponent of the Maryland Dream Act. The Dream Act would permit recent high school graduates who are in the country illegally to pay in-state tuition under certain conditions. Parrott helped force the newly passed law onto the 2012 ballot by rounding up more than 100,000 signatures in a petition, .

Mooney, a former state senator, had served as staff assistant to the man who currently holds the District 6 seat: U.S. Rep. Roscoe G. Bartlett, who is also running for re-election.
