VIDEO: Police Softball Tourney Conjures Competition, Camaraderie

The annual tournament is in its 26th year.

Teams from all over the East Coast—including Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Toronto—descended on Frederick for the Montgomery County Police Annual National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Softball Tournament. The tournament has been played for 26 years. The winner of the "competitive division" qualified for the National Police Softball World Series in October, hosted this year in Las Vegas.

Play began on Friday with a showdown among teams from each of the county's police districts and several of the department's special divisions. Out of the 10 teams that competed in the one-day tournament, the 4th District (Wheaton) and 2nd District (Bethesda) battled it out in the final. Due to scheduling complications, however, the game was stopped during the fourth inning and the two districts were declared co-tournament champions.

The "competitive division" played Saturday and Sunday. Out of the 13 teams competing, some 30 to 40 Montgomery County officers took part. They played on several teams, including the Montgomery County Police Department squad, the Montgomery County Young Guns, the Maryland Lawmen and others.
