Moving Account of Attempted Rescue of North Potomac Man in Navy Yard Shooting

Reports say co-workers scrambled frantically in an attempt to rescue a North Potomac native who died in Monday's Navy Yard shooting.

A number of Navy Yard workers moved quickly in an attempt to save a North Potomac man who died in Monday's Navy Yard shooting, according to a report by The Associated Press.

Vishnu Pandit, 61, was one of 12 civilians shot and killed Monday by former Navy Reservist Aaron Alexis.

The North Potomac resident had spent 30 years with the Navy, and co-workers frantically scrambled to remove him from the building in an attempt to save his life after he suffered a gunshot wound to the left temple, according to the report.

Pandit's colleague Bertillia Lavern quickly identified him as a victim, stayed with him and prayed, according to the report. "I felt him breathe," she told the AP.

Lavern and others were able to remove Pandit from the facility to a street corner a few blocks away, according to the report. A number of people administered medical care to Pandit before an ambulance arrived.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at George Washington University Hospital, where the hospital's director of trauma and acute care surgery, called the injury "not survivable," according to the report.
