Readings: Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam by James McPherson and Part Four of America’s War: Talking About the Civil War and Emancipation on Their 150th Anniversaries, an anthology of historical fiction, speeches, diaries, memoirs, biography, and short stories, edited by Edward L. Ayers

Many historians, including James McPherson, view the battle of Antietam as a pivotal event in the Civil War, paving the way for ultimate Union victory. Victory came at a cost, though, to families and communities in both the Union and Confederacy. Join us for an engaging discussion around these themes led by Brent Newton, JD, Adjunct Professor of Political Science, University of Maryland, Baltimore County and Adjunct Professor of Law, Georgetown University. Drawing from McPherson's Crossroads of Freedom and Part Four of Ayers' anthology, we will explore the political and personal aspects of the Civil War. A limited number of books to be discussed are available for borrowing from the Priddy Library. You do not need to have read the books to attend the discussion.
