Frugal Family: Feb. 28-March 6

Check out some of the best deals for family dining in the county.

There’s no shortage of options in upper Montgomery County for a quick, inexpensive meal, especially for children. Multiple fast-food locations beckon, as do chains such as California Tortilla or Chicken Out Rotisserie, where kids’ meals are always available.

But what about when parents want to eat something a little more involved, or perhaps get a beer to go with their pizza? Well, there are plenty of options for that, too. Several establishments in the region offer menus specifically catered to children’s tastes for less than 6 bucks apiece. They range from typical “kids meal” fare, such as grilled cheese and fries, to a la carte options and even fancy Italian-theme dinners for tots.

So, for an inexpensive “family date night,” here are a few places Patch recommends you try out:

  • At Buffalo Wings & Beer, at 8035 Snouffer School Road, mom and dad can snack on pizza, wings and wash it down with a beer or wine while the kids 10 and younger enjoy dinner from a menu that includes three $3.99 combinations – choose from a hot dog, pizza or grilled cheese paired with french fries and a drink.
  • For families with a more adventurous palate, Hunan Express, at 9134 Rothbury Drive, offers plenty of a la carte options under $5. While mom and dad chow down on moo shu pork or roast duck, children can enjoy six-piece sushi rolls, such as the popular California roll, cucumber roll or shrimp roll, for only $3.95.
  • And if the babysitter cancels, but you still want to have that special dinner out, try Agrodolce, at 21030 Frederick Road in Germantown. The adults can indulge in calamari and gnocchi with wild mushrooms, while the kids choose from $5 or $6 dinners such as gemelli rosé (corkscrew pasta in a tomato cream sauce) or farfalle with pork tenderloin, peas, carrots and corn.
