Lettuce Recalled Due to Fear of E. Coli

No illnesses yet reported from shipments that went to 19 states.

Possible E. coli contamination has led a California-based grower to recall more than 2,000 cases of romaine lettuce that was shipped to 19 states—Maryland among them—in the past two weeks.

No illnesses have been reported, but Tanimura & Antle Inc. is voluntarily recalling 2,095 cases “in an overabundance of caution,” according to a statement issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The recall is based on one random sample taken by health officials in Canada.

The product in question is the “Field Fresh Wrapped Single Head Romaine,” which may have a “best buy” date of Aug. 19. The lettuce was for sale throughout the United States and Canada between Aug. 2 and Aug. 19.
