Business Update: Roy's Place Operating On Shortened Schedule

Business has been "dying off a little bit."

Those hoping to grab a late sandwich during the week at Roy's Place had better make other plans.

The restaurant has been dark and empty at nights during the week. But fear not, Gaithersburg, the restaurant has merely cut back on its hours.

"We're closing earlier than we used to," Roy's Place kitchen manager Rick Brindley said. "Business has been dying off a little bit."

Roy's Place, located at 2 East Diamond Avenue, is now open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The restaurant previously stayed open until 9 p.m. on Sundays and Mondays, 10 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, and 10:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Brindley said the restaurant is currently operating without a liquor license, which has contributed to the downturn in business. He did not say if or when the restaurant would be able to renew its previous license.

A great place with fantastic sandwiches but it can't survive without customers. You don't know what you've got till it's gone.

Many important people are friends of Roy's Place. Why can't one of them persuade the county liquor department to renew the license expeditiously. Inability to serve alcohol will ultimately kill off one of Gaithersburg's few remaining unique and traditional establishments.

I understand Roy's Place has indeed closed, as of Dec. 30. It's a real shame SOMETHING couldn't have been worked out to reinstate the liquor license. Without it, one more unique, local "landmark" was doomed to wither away. "You don't know what you've got till it's gone." Sadly true.
