Gaithersburg Arts News: New Shows at Arts Barn, Choir Event at Kentlands Mansion

The Gaithersburg Arts Barn welcomes two new shows, beginning Friday, Oct. 26, and Friday, Nov. 2, respectively.

The city released the following information about upcoming arts and entertainment events:

Magic, Interactive Theater Delight Audiences at Comedy & Magic Society Performances

Magicians Mark Phillips, Bob Sheets, Barry Wood and Brian Curry invite you to join them as members of the exotic, strange, and amusingly interactive Comedy & Magic Society.

As audience members enter the theatre, they’ll step into the secret and very kooky world of the CMS, a collection of zany characters not quite clever enough to take themselves lightly. This season’s periodic “Society Meetings” — each with a different agenda, frequently with guest artists — will be held on Friday evenings, Oct. 26, Nov. 23, and Dec. 28 at the Arts Barn. All performances begin at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $12 for residents and $15 for nonresidents.

Dark Comedy Crimes of the Heart Takes Center Stage at Arts Barn

In partnership with Sandy Spring Theatre Group, the Arts Barn presents Beth Henley’s Crimes of the Heart, a warm-hearted and zany comedy-drama that examines the plight of three sisters betrayed by their passions. The show runs Nov. 2-18, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.

This show contains adult language and situations. Parental guidance is suggested.

Admission is $16, $14 for City of Gaithersburg residents.

Joyous Choir Music Fills Elegant Kentlands Mansion

Enjoy songs of the season from the Middle Ages through the Baroque with "Nowell: Arise and Wake!” featuring chamber choirs Carmina and Illuminare on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at 8 p.m. in the Kentlands Mansion.

Carmina, known for its gorgeous tonal balance, is devoted to exploring the diverse musical styles of early music.  Illuminare, Carmina’s women’s ensemble, was founded to illuminate exceptional vocal music of past centuries.  The ensemble focuses on early vocal repertoire composed or arranged for women’s voices.
