Aliabaad Farm Once Hosted Lincoln and Civil War Generals

Aliabaad Farm home to new Civil War discoveries: rich history of land begets rich and flavorful produce.

Recently, it was discovered that President Lincoln and Generals McClellan and Burnside were hosted on our farm during the Civil War battle of Antietam! The single bloodiest battle in American history, Antietam and the subsequent Union victory awarded Lincoln the confidence he needed to sign the Emancipation Proclamation.

Dennis and Leslie Frye of the Harpers Ferry Historical Association were at the head of this discovery. They were able to provide us with many pictures of the President and his Generals at various locations on our farm. During a walking tour, the locations of several previously unidentified photographs were revealed to have been on our grounds! For instance, a photo of General McClellan sitting with his advisors near a rather distinguished rock was placed present-day in the middle of our free-range chicken pasture! The land where our goats currently reside was camp for Burnside’s infantry, whom Lincoln is depicted visiting in another photo.

We will keep you updated as we learn more. This history will be preserved in our Visitors Center. CSA members will be welcome to a tour of our farm’s history: for inquiries, visit our website, call 301-980-3319, or email ali@satways.com.
