Heat, Outages Don't Stifle the 19th Street Band

Local troubadours played country/rock favorites and a handful of original tunes as the Montgomery Village Foundation's Summer Concert Series reached its midway point.

While many of us were still in the dark, stressed and overheated of this, Montgomery Village Residents still made it out for the Sunday evening Picnic on the Green concert featuring the 19th Street Band.

While we sat in the shade and downed bottled water by the caseful, husband and wife Caolaidhe &  Meghan Davis (guitar / violin and vocals), Richard Vega (drums), Mike Scoglio (bass) and Tom Verratti (banjo) took the stage and rocked us out with a little bit country, a little bit funk and a ton of energy.

They played familiar favorites like Last Dance and Freefallin' by Tom Petty, as well as hits from Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin, and of course the crowd loved the hit The Cave by Mumford & Sons. They also seamlessly weaved in their original tunes such as Melinda Lou and One for the Money.

Though the temperature was firmly in the 90s through most of the set, the 19th Street Band didn't let the heat and sweat stop them from giving us their all. Meghan plays that violin with confidence and power, and recently added Richard was wailing on the drums. I loved how when I thought I found a relaxed moment, Caolaidhe would pump it up and start rocking around. No matter how hot it got, Tom and Mike kept it looking cool as they strummed along. Check out their official web site 19thStreetBand.com for some original music.

We've passed the halfway mark in the Picnic in the Park Sunday concert series, there are still plenty of more shows in the summer, so don't miss out. Shows are every Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Bowie Pavilion. There is plenty of parking near Watkins Mill Elementary.
