Med Tech Killed While Bicycling to Hospital

Collision in Olney claims life of Dockside resident Diane Whitman, 48.

A Montgomery Village woman died Thursday morning when she was struck by a car as she bicycled along her usual route to work at Montgomery General Hospital.

Shortly before 6:30 a.m. Thursday, a gray 2011 Toyota Camry was driving eastbound on Olney-Laytonsville Road (Rte. 108) near the intersection with Zion Road when, for reasons still under investigation, the car struck a bicyclist also headed eastbound, according to Montgomery County Police.

The cyclist, Diane M. Whitman, 48, of the 9800 block of Sailfish Terrace—in the Dockside neighborhood of South Village—was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.

Whitman was as a medical technician at Montgomery General Hospital who oftentimes rode her bike to work, according to WTOP. The collision occurred roughly two-thirds of the way into the 11-mile trip.

Police have identified Heather Simmons, 30, of the 25500 block of Coltrane Drive in Damascus as the Toyota’s driver. She was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision to call the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 301-840-2435. Callers may remain anonymous.
