Gaithersburg High School Student Remains In Critical Condition

Nicole Marie Polen, 15, remains in critical condition from bike accident, The Gazette reports.

A 15-year-old Montgomery Village girl slated to be a junior at Gaithersburg High School remained in critical condition Tuesday afternoon with injuries sustained in the collision of her bike and another vehicle last Thursday, Montgomery County Police told The Gazette.

Nicole Marie Polen and a 16-year-old friend were crossing the intersection of Route 124 (Woodfield Road) and Airpark Road against the pedestrian signal when Polen was hit just before 7 a.m. on Aug. 23. Police said Polen suffered life-threatening injuries.

Polen's friend was able to cross the intersection without being injured.

On the first day of school, Gaithersburg principal Christine Handy-Collins said the Trojan family was keeping Polen, a member of the cross-country and swim teams, in its thoughts and prayers.

"We’re certainly saddened by what has happened and we are keeping in touch with the family," Handy-Collins said.
